The ACT Government is committed to increasing use of public transport through integrated planning and improvements that make the public system more attractive, reliable and sustainable.
Public consultation for the Transport for Canberra policy finished on 11 November. The final policy will be forwarded to the Minister for Planning shortly.
Draft Transport for Canberra policy page
Transport for Canberra aims to increase the share of public transport trips to and from work to 9% of commuter travel by the end of 2011 and 16% by 2026. This will require carefully targeted infrastructure supported by clear policies and strategies that are integrated with urban development and other planning decisions.
Mass rapid transit remains under active consideration. The ACT Government has announced a mass rapid transit study in 2011-12 focusing on Northbourne Avenue and the Gungahlin to City transport corridor. The study builds on a current study that is examining improvements to the existing bus system on Northbourne Avenue, and will explore the possibility of the transition from bus to light rail at some future date.
To achieve this, the ACT Government is already commissioning feasibility studies and progressing infrastructure projects along the major transport corridors in Canberra. $97 million was included in the 2010-11 ACT Budget and a further $147 million was committed to road and public transport initiatives in the 2011-12 ACT Budget.
The feasibility studies below are part of that commitment to the ACT's transport future.
The feasibility studies outlined below are designed to establish major bus stations, bus priority measures (e.g. dedicated bus lanes, queue jumps at intersections), and expansion of the network of Park and Ride and Bike and Ride facilities in the north, south, east and west of the ACT.
The measures will be complemented by bus network improvements, real time passenger information and upgraded bus stops. Strategic studies into how to provide transport for the disadvantaged and isolated communities, smart parking technology and transport pricing will help expand our understanding of how to improve the transport system in Canberra.
