Off peak travel Opal travel for concessions

If you have a concession card you may be eligible for reduced or free fares when travelling by bus.

To purchase a Concession MyWay card you will need to present your concession card to a MyWay Recharge Agent or Access Canberra Service Centre. You will be required to present your card at an Agent each time your concession is renewed to ensure you maintain your concession fare entitlement.

Failure to reapply your concession upon expiry will result in standard fares being charged for travel. Refunds will not be provided where the customer has purchased the wrong card type; has failed to provide proof of concession when purchasing their MyWay card; and/or the concession entitlement expires.

The below listed passengers are eligible for free bus travel:

  • Children aged 5 and under who are not attending school
  • ACT residents aged over 70
  • Department of Veterans Affairs TPI Gold Card holders
  • Passengers with a visual impairment

Proof of concession entitlement must be carried at all times.

The below cards are accepted for concession fares:

High School and College Student Identity Card

Must include:

  • Student name
  • Date of birth
  • Photo of card holder
  • Full Time status
  • Issued by a school within Australia

The card holder is eligible for a Student MyWay card or concession cash fares.

Tertiary Student Identity Card

Must include:

  • Student name
  • Photo of card holder
  • Full Time status
  • Issued by a school within Australia

The card holder is eligible for a Tertiary MyWay card or concession cash fares.

Free senior and concession off-peak MyWay fares

As part of a 12 month trial (commencing Saturday 14 January 2017) , eligible senior and concession holders who travel using MyWay will be able to take advantage of this initiative during stated Transport Canberra off peak travel times which are: between 9am - 4.30pm and after 6pm weekdays and all day Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays.

To take advantage of free travel you will require a positive balance on your MyWay card and will need to tap on and tap off the bus correctly using MyWay during the stated off peak periods. Failure to tap off correctly will result in passengers being charged the default fare. Your journey must commence by MyWay tap on, during the off peak period.

  1. How do I know if I am eligible?
    To be eligible you must hold a valid concession MyWay card and carry with you at all times, proof of your concession.

  2. When is the free travel applicable?
    Free off peak travel will commence on Saturday 14 January 2017 with the trial running for an initial 12 months.
    Free travel can be accessed during stated Transport Canberra off peak travel times which are: between 9am - 4.30pm and after 6pm weekdays and all day Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays.
    You must tap on during off peak travel times to access the free travel.
  3. What if I forget to tap off? Will I be charged a fare?
    Yes. If you forget to tap off at the completion of your journey you will be charged a standard default fare.
  4. Do I need to be a MyWay card user to claim free travel?
    Yes, you must use MyWay to claim your free travel entitlements. Using MyWay will ensure that travel data from the MyWay system is collected and can be used to measure the success of the trial over the next 12 months.
  5. Are students able to claim free travel?
    No. Student and tertiary card holders are not entitled to free off peak travel as part of this trial.
  6. Does this change anything for ACTION Gold Card holders or seniors over 70 years of age?
    No, ACTION Gold Card holders or seniors over 70 with a seniors/MyWay card are still entitled to free travel on ACTION buses at all times.

Cards accepted for free off-peak concession MyWay fares as part of the trial

Pension Concession Card

Issued by The Department of Human Services. The primary card holder is eligible for a Concession MyWay card or concession cash fares.

Health Care Card

Issued by The Department of Human Services. The primary card holder is eligible for a Concession MyWay card or concession cash fares.

Gold Card

Issued by The Department of Veterans Affairs. Card holder is entitled to a Concession MyWay card, which can be purchased from a MyWay Recharge Agent.

Note: If a Gold Card is embossed with TPI, the card holder is eligible for free travel. Passengers can either present this card and board the bus for free, or apply for a free travel pass from the MyWay Administration Office by phoning 13 17 10, or emailing myway@act.gov.au.

Vision Impaired Travel Pass

Vision Impaired Travel Pass holders are entitled to free travel on regular route services, including an attendant, if required. An ACT issued Vision Impaired Travel Pass may be accepted by interstate transit authorities where provision allows for free or subsidised travel for vision impaired persons. Each state and territory policy varies, so please check your travel entitlements with the appropriate authority prior to commencement of your journey.

In the ACT, vision impaired travel passes issued by another Australian State or Territory Government are also accepted, and receive free travel on regular route services. Attendants of the pass holder also travel for free under these passes.

The Vision Impaired Travel Pass is issued by MyWay Administration Office to eligible recipients. Please call 13 17 10 for more information on how to apply.

Companion Card

Issued by The Department of Disability, Housing, and Community Services. The card holder's eligible companion is allowed free travel when this card is presented to the driver.

ACT Services Access Card

Issued by Companion House. Eligible for a Concession MyWay card or concession cash fares.

ACT Seniors Card

Concession fares apply to ACT Senior Card holders at all times. Off peak fares between the hours of 9:30 am and 4:00 pm, weekend and public holidays are free. 

Issued by COTA ACT, ACT Public Libraries and Access Canberra Service Centres. Please refer to the listed MyWay Recharge Agents for which Access Canberra Service Centres have MyWay cards.

ACT Seniors/MyWay Card holders are entitled to concessional bus travel. Seniors aged 70 and over are entitled to free bus travel.

Interstate Seniors Card

Concession fares apply to interstate senior card holders at all times. Off peak fares between the hours of 9:30 am and 4:00 pm, weekend and public holidays are free.
