The ACT Government committed $12.5 million to allow for the design and implementation of a RTPIS.
The implementation of a RTPIS will improve access to public transport through electronic media channels, and increase public transport utilisation and patronage.
A RTPIS will provide commuters with instant timetable information for ACTION bus services.
The new system, which will be known as 'NXTBUS', will track ACTION buses and provide instant information to passengers in relation to their current location and their estimated arrival time at the next stop.
Trapeze Austrics Pty, a company with over 40 years experience on the international market who is a global supplier of real time fleet management systems, has been selected as the preferred supplier for the delivery of NXTBUS.
The ACT Government has engaged consultants KEMA Pty Ltd to manage the implementation of a RTPIS.
Chief Minister’s announcement about real time project.
The primary purpose of implementing a RTPI system is to improve access to public transport through electronic media channels, and to increase public transport utilisation and patronage growth.
It is expected that the real time passenger information system will provide the community with real time arrival and departure information. This may include digital displays, the internet, mobile phones/PDAs, touch screen displays and on bus visual displays.
The request for tender for the supply, installation and on-going maintenance of the system was released in December 2011. Installation of the system has commenced with the system becoming fully operational by 2013.
Paper based timetables will still be available at all major bus stations and can also be downloaded online at the ACTION website.
Feedback has been valuable in understanding the communities expectation of a Real Time Passenger Information System for Canberra. Feedback from surveys and focus groups held in August 2011 has been incorporated into the system requirements. The ACT Government would like to thank everyone who provided their input.
