The Government is delivering transport system improvements with the Transport for Canberra package.
The projects funded as part of the Transport for Canberra program are the first stage in implementing the proposed 2031 Strategic Public Transport Network Plan. The Strategic Public Transport Network Plan will establish permanent transit corridors with services operating at 15 minute (or better) frequencies all day.
The Red and Blue Rapid services and Parliamentary Zone services introduced in November 2010 are the first stage of building the frequent network.
The frequent network will provide highly reliable and permanent trunk public bus services, allowing for easy travel across the ACT. It will be supported Bike and Ride and Park and Ride facilities along rapid corridors, allowing people more flexibility in how they design their journey to work.
The public transport system will also continue to cater for passengers who travel within their local area or during non-peak times. The Government is currently using Census data to look at where people with high public transport needs and relatively lower transport supply live and work. This will assist the Government in developing minimum service standards and delivering better bus services for the community. The potential role for demand responsive transport in Canberra's transport network will also be investigated.
