Real Time Passenger Information System (RTPIS)

Project Overview

The ACT Government committed $12.5 million to allow for the design and implementation of a RTPIS.

The implementation of a RTPIS will improve access to public transport through electronic media channels, and increase public transport utilisation and patronage.

A RTPIS will provide commuters with instant timetable information for ACTION bus services.

It is expected that the system will monitor the location of all ACTION buses during operation, allowing real time arrival and departure information to be provided to passengers.

The ACT Government has engaged consultants KEMA Pty Ltd to manage the implementation of a RTPIS.

What features may be included in the system?

The primary purpose of implementing a RTPI system is to improve access to public transport through electronic media channels, and to increase public transport utilisation and patronage growth.

It is expected that the real time passenger information system will provide the community with real time arrival and departure information. This may include digital displays, the internet, mobile phones/PDAs, touch screen displays and on bus visual displays.

When will the system be operational?

The request for tender for the supply, installation and on-going maintenance of the system was released in December 2011. Installation of the system is expected to commence by mid-2012 with the system becoming fully operational by 2013.

Paper based timetables will still be available at all major bus stations and can also be downloaded online at www.action.act.gov.au.

Community Feedback

Feedback has been valuable in understanding the communities expectation of a Real Time Passenger Information System for Canberra. Feedback from surveys and focus groups held in August 2011 has been incorporated into the system requirements. The ACT Government would like to thank everyone who provided their input.
