Transport in Canberra

Canberra’s transport network is the backbone of our city. It connects people and places, enabling access to jobs and services, and facilitates commercial activities. The network is a comprehensive system made up of all the infrastructure and services needed to move people and goods in and around Canberra. We might think of our transport network only in terms of roads or vehicles, but our network encompasses all the varied elements needed to make a seamless journey. It extends from our roads, footpaths, cycle paths and parking lots, to our public transport and flexible transport services, to our cross-border coach, rail and air services. It also includes lesser obvious elements, such as Canberra’s journey planning applications and traffic lights and bluetooth sensors; even our street trees, which provide shade and shelter for people walking or cycling and add to the beauty of our city.

Canberra’s transport network is far more than the sum of its parts. When everything works together as a single, seamless network, it provides unlimited choices for Canberrans’ many and diverse travel needs. It really is one network for many journeys.

The network includes 3100 km road, 1000 bridges, 450 buses, 2500 bus stops, 13 light rail stops, 14 light rail vehicles, 2500 km footpaths, 1000 km shared paths, 80000 lights and 21 community buses.
