Canberra Walk & Ride Week

Canberra Walk and Ride Week - Photo competition winner

Congratulations to Jess Dibb, who has won herself a double movie voucher for the following submission to the Walk & Ride Week photo competition:

Without a doubt my favourite place in Canberra to ride to get between home in Braddon and work in Deakin is around Lake Burley Griffin. I love riding as a mode of transport to work as it gets me active and outdoors, whilst reducing my carbon footprint!

I also love seeing various wildlife around the lake, from cute fluffy cygnets and swamp hen chicks in summer to ducks creating road blocks on bike paths in the rain making the ride more cheerful on a gloomy miserable day! Of course there are many surprises too, like seeing many hot air balloons in the sky during the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, enjoying double rainbows courtesy of the Captain Cook Jet with some seagulls and some magnificent sunrises and sunsets during Autumn/Winter when daylight saving ends!

I have attached to this email some of my favourite photos from my daily ride over the past years (there are so many marvellous views on my ride, I had such difficulty choosing which photos to submit hence I made a collage below). I feel fortunate to live in a city with an extensive network of cycle paths and good road rules to keep cyclists like myself safe on our daily commute to work!
Since the start of Canberra Walk and Ride week, I have been using ACTiveLog Smartphone app to track my activities as attached (I had been using Strava previously). I find the ‘Incident Report’ function very handy (I was able to quickly report broken traffic lights along Allara Street on route to work).

Join the ACT Government's inaugural Canberra Walk & Ride Week. This is an exciting initiative and the first of its type in Australia. All Canberrans are encouraged to walk, ride and catch public transport as often as possible for any journey purpose during the week. It might be your commute to school, to work, to a meeting or appointment during the day, to a social outing, to the shops on the weekend, or to one of our many and diverse events during the week.

Walking or riding a bike as a mode of transport to get from point A to point B (active travel) is an easy, fun and efficient way for all Canberrans to incorporate regular physical activity into our daily routines. Walking and riding as a mode of transport helps to keep you fit and healthy, provides a sense of happiness, health and wellbeing, contributes to a more liveable city and connects you with your local community.

As part of the Canberra Walk and Ride Week, an exciting new smartphone app has been developed which will help the Government provide better walking and cycling infrastructure for all Canberrans.

The app, ACTiveLog, is designed to use GPS traces to track walking and cycling activities of those who download and use the free app. Data collected will provide a picture of where, how and when Canberrans walk and cycle as a mode of transport. The more we understand how Canberrans move about our city on foot and by bike, the more informed our decision making processes will be for future infrastructure and facility investments.
