New public transport fares from 5 January 2019

At the beginning of each year Transport Canberra revises its fares in line with inflation. Consistent with previous years, new public transport fares have taken effect from Saturday 5 January 2019.

From 5 January 2019 MyWay fares for public transport in the ACT will increase by up to 2.5%. Cash fares will also increase by 2.5%, rounded to the nearest 10 cents. The concession single cash fare has increased by 4.2%, from $2.40 to $2.50. This is because this fare did not increase in 2018, due to rounding, so the increase reflects two years of inflation.

With the introduction of Light Rail, MyWay and cash light rail fares are set at the same level as bus fares – customers will pay the same fare whether they are catching a bus or taking light rail this includes a free 90 minute transfer period. You can connect between Light Rail and a bus using the same ticket within 90 minutes.

The ACT Government is making numerous investments and major improvements to Canberra’s public transport network, including the integrated public transport network, new buses, a new depot at Woden and new ticket vending machines.

MyWay Fares

MyWay is the cheapest way to travel. This ticketing system will automatically calculate the cheapest possible fare per passenger, based on any eligible concession and daily or monthly fare caps.

Children five and under not attending school and ACT Seniors Over 70 travel free.

Please view the below table for a list of applicable charges.

Cash Fares

Transport Canberra accepts cash fares for travel. All single fares entitle passengers to a free 90 minute transfer period. This enables you to connect to a different bus using the same ticket if within 90 minutes of purchasing your ticket. Daily tickets are valid until midnight on the day of purchase.

Cash fares are still accepted for passengers who do not hold a MyWay card.

For adults, a standard fare applies for single trip and daily tickets. Concession fares apply to valid concession card holders and students.

You can save on your travel costs by travelling with a MyWay card.

Paying with exact change for a fare is preferred. Change can be given in most instances, depending on the amount of change available. Passengers may be refused entry if the driver is unable to provide change for large note denominations.

Concessions

If you have a concession card you may be eligible for reduced or free fares when travelling by public transport.

To purchase a Concession MyWay card you will need to present your concession card to a MyWay Recharge Agent or Access Canberra Service Centre. You will be required to present your card at an Agent each time your concession is renewed to ensure you maintain your concession fare entitlement.

Failure to reapply your concession upon expiry will result in standard fares being charged for travel. Refunds will not be provided where the customer has purchased the wrong card type; has failed to provide proof of concession when purchasing their MyWay card; and/or the concession entitlement expires.
