Heading to the National Multicultural Festival from Friday 15 February to Sunday 17 February? Avoid the hassle of driving in and out of the City and catch public transport to and from the festival.
We will be increasing capacity across the bus network to accommodate crowds for over the weekend. Additional 200 and 300 Rapid bus services will be in place on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 February to get you to and from the National Multicultural Festival with ease. Regular fares apply.
A special Multicultural Festival Late Night Rapid service will run on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 February during the festival. The Late Night Rapid service is a modified version of the Red and Blue Rapids, it includes:
- a Late Night Red Rapid will service Gungahlin, City and Kingston.
- a Late Night Blue Rapid will service Belconnen, City, Woden and Tuggeranong
Buses will depart the City every 20 minutes with the last bus departing the City at approximately 2:00 am on Friday and Saturday night. Buses will travel to major town centres or bus stations along the route.
To connect passengers home Transport Canberra is partnering with Uber to offer discounted Uber rides, making it an even more convenient and affordable option.
Passengers simply have to download the Uber app to get a ride to and from their nearest major bus station (except Civic) and they will automatically get up to $10 off their trip.
You can catch a Late Night Rapid and Uber home from the City, with a $10 off Uber fares between 2:00pm and 3:00am on the following dates:
- Friday 15 February
- Saturday 16 February

Transport Canberra's Late Night Rapid bus service includes:
- a Late Night Red Rapid service between Gungahlin and Kingston

How to request a discounted Late Night Rapid trip:
- Open the Uber app and choose your destination
- Tap the Late Night Rapid icon in the app, this will appear to the right of the UberX icon (please note that the icon will only appear if the origin and destination are within the service area, and during the relevant service time).
- Select 'Confirm Late Night Rapid'
- Select ‘Confirm Pickup’
Is my trip eligible?
Trips will be eligible if they are to AND from anywhere within eligible zones, to a bus stop within the same zone. 'Late Night Rapid' will appear in your app if the trip is eligible for the automatic $10 discount. The $10 discount will NOT APPLY when the Uber is booked from the zone that is not highlighted on the attached map below.
You'll be eligible for up to two discounted trips each night; one to your closest Late Night Rapid bus stop between 2:00pm and 11:00pm, and another from your closest Late Night Rapid bus stop between 9:00pm and 3:00am.
You can also connect to one of our convenient Park and Ride locations before traveling on our rapids into the City or major town centres.
Regular cash fares apply on the Late Night Rapids, or for the cheapest fare simply tap on and tap off with MyWay. Passengers can also top-up their MyWay card or purchase a single ticket via the Ticket Vending Machines now available at Gungahlin, Woden, City and Tuggeranong major bus stations.
Temporary Diversions and Road Closures for the National Multicultural Festival 2019
The National Multicultural Festival will take place on 15 - 17 February 2019. As part of the festival, the section between East Row and Akuna Street on London Circuit will be closed during this period.
What has changed?
A number of Transport Canberra bus services will be affected by the temporary closure. The following diversions and stop closure will be in place from 1am on Friday 15 February 2019. Regular services will resume from Monday 18 February.
- London Circuit will be closed in both directions from East Row to Akuna Street, London Circuit
- The following bus stops will be closed during this period and alternative departure locations are listed in the attached documents.
Please ensure you plan ahead and allow additional travel time in consideration of traffic delays anticipated for the event.
To get to the National Multicultural Festival, you may need to use multiple modes of transport, including bus, walking and cycling.
Plan your trip ahead of time. The best way to plan your journey is to use the Journey Planner on the Transport Canberra website. The Journey Planner allows you to select your mode of travel and then select your start and end destination. To plan your travel to and from the City simply place your starting destination in the starting point and then choose the City Bus Station as your destination. You will then be able to plan your travel depending on when you wish to leave.
Please consider the temporary relocation of stops when using NXTBUS during this period. Please take note of all the signage and PA announcements. Transport Canberra staff will also be available to assist passengers during this period.
Security measures in place
For the safety of passengers Transport Officers, CCTV, increased lighting and Transport Canberra Customer Services Staff will be present during the Late Night Rapids hours of operations.
