The Black Opal Stakes is Canberra's premier race day. The inaugural Black Opal Stakes in 1973 was won by Rich Reward. Now the day is one of the more important Autumn race days on the calendar.

Regular Services to Thoroughbred Park
Travel on ALL Transport Canberra services is FREE on race day to holders of a Black Opal Stakes ticket - show your ticket to the driver when boarding.
Thoroughbred Park will be serviced by Transport Canberra’s Red Rapid 200, Route 956 and Route 958, which will operate along their usual routes between City and Gungahlin with a detour down Randwick Road for racegoers.
Free Shuttle Services
A free shuttle service is available after the event from Thoroughbred Park to the City Bus Station via The Duxton. This service will operate on a loop after the races between 4pm to 7:30pm. Shuttles will depart from the pickup bay outside the main entrance of the racecourse.
The best way to plan your trip is to use the new Journey Planner on the Transport Canberra website.
The Journey Planner allows you to select your mode of travel, in this case bus, and then select your start and end destination. You can even enter in when you wish to leave.
To plan your travel to Thoroughbred Park simply place your location in the starting point and then place your destination point. You will then be able to plan your travel depending on when you wish to leave.
Passengers are encouraged to take advantage of Park & Ride facilities where possible.
