Now in its 20th year, Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event where school students are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school with their friends and family.
Canberra schools are encouraged to participate by holding a Walk to School Day event on Friday 17 May 2019. Schools are also encouraged to join the Ride or Walk to School and It’s Your Move Safe Cycle programs, which are available for all ACT schools and are designed to drive culture change within the school community to make walking or riding to school the norm.
WSTSD promotes and informs parents, carers, teachers and children of the significant physical, mental and social health benefits which can be achieved through regular walking. Benefits include healthier, happier and more attentive students, less congestion and safer school environments.
In the ACT, a number of initiatives are being delivered to promote walking or riding to school. Along with the Ride or Walk to School and It’s Your Move Safe Cycle programs, there are also the Active Streets for Schools and the School Crossing Supervisor programs. These can all be found on the Active travel for schools page.
Supporting resources are available on the Walk Safely to School website (http://www.walk.com.au/wstsd/), including information and promotional kits.
