COVID-19 transport updates and information


Transport Canberra’s priority is the safety of customers and staff. We are continuing to provide the services the community rely on each day for necessary travel.

While restrictions have eased in some areas, we ask that people avoid public transport in peak hour to help with physical distancing on services.

We have implemented an increased cleaning regime on our buses and light rail vehicles as well as at high-traffic areas such as stops and interchanges.

Cleaning

Transport Canberra and Canberra Metro have increased cleaning on buses and light rail. People will see teams undertaking cleaning of hard surfaces across bus interchanges and light rail stops.

The additional cleaning program sees buses cleaned twice a day and light rail vehicles cleaned onboard from 7am to 7pm and again overnight. These include internal surfaces such as MyWay card readers, poles, stop buttons, seats and as well as extra cleans of all hard surfaces at stops and interchanges – conducted mornings and evenings.

Hygiene

We remind our customers to look after their hygiene, with information on board our vehicles and at stations and stops across the network. Customers should not travel on public transport if they feel unwell and only travel if absolutely necessary.

Cash handling

Until further notice, cash will no longer be accepted on Transport Canberra buses. Please use MyWay or pre-purchase tickets from ticket vending machines.

MyWay cards and tickets purchased from a ticket vending machine are the smartest way to travel with us. Aside from being the most hygienic option – purchasing a MyWay card is also cheaper than using cash.

Ticket vending machines are located at all light rail stops and most bus interchanges and are a quick and easy way to purchase a ticket if you don’t have a MyWay card.

The most convenient way to top up your MyWay card is through Autopay. Alternately you can go to a recharge agent or ticket vending machine for an instant top up.

A timely reminder to register your MyWay card online and to tap on and off each time you travel – this will help us provide you with your travel history if needed.

Physical distancing

We ask people to help us with physical distancing on and around the public transport network to make using the services as comfortable and healthy as possible for people, and to practice good hygiene.

Where possible please maintain a 1.5 metre distance from other passengers and staff at stops and stations.

Spread out on board buses and light rail vehicles – and leave at least one seat between yourself and other passengers and staff if you can.

Avoid peak hours

Please avoid travelling in peak periods. Travelling outside peak times will assist with maintaining physical distancing on board vehicles and at stops and stations. It’s also cheaper.

Walk, run or ride to work

Walking, running or riding to work will reduce pressure on our public transport system and the road network. Consider walking, running or cycling if you can.

Light rail vehicle doors opening automatically

As a temporary measure, light rail vehicle doors will be automatically opened at all stops, except for during adverse weather conditions, to remove the need for passengers to press the ‘open door’ button.

Temporary closure of front seat

The front seat of the bus remains temporarily closed off, providing more space between our drivers and customers.

Use of rear bus doors

Customers are asked to please enter and exit the bus via the rear doors at all stops unless they require the front doors for low floor access – just signal the driver if you need to use the front doors.

Just tap on and off using the MyWay reader or pre-purchase a ticket from a ticket vending machine located at major stations.

Drivers will only not open the rear doors if there are safety concerns at particular locations, or access is required for a pram, wheelchair or less abled person.

Schools

Parents are asked to reconsider the need for their child to use public transport to get to school and should look at alternative transport if their school special or route bus is crowded. This may include active travel options such as walking or bike riding or drop off by private vehicle.

COVIDSafe app

Developed by the Federal Government, COVIDSafe is a new tool, to be used alongside manual contact tracing, testing and physical distancing, to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in Australia.

Created as a public health initiative, the app uses mobile phone technology to automate some aspects of the contact tracing that state and territory health officials are already doing manually.
