Free public transport for local veterans during commemorative events


The ACT Government announced today that veterans will be able to travel for free on public transport for a week from Remembrance Day 2019 and a week from ANZAC Day 2020.

Veterans, including current serving defence force members, will be able to travel for free on Transport Canberra buses and light rail services from:

Veterans may be asked to present proof of service or current identification, which may include a Department of Veterans’ Affairs issued Health Card, Veteran Card, a current ADF ID card or other eligible veterans’ identification (see below examples).

There are no changes to other concessions during these periods, including for veterans who are already eligible for free travel.

Veterans using free travel on buses

Veterans will be asked to present to the bus driver a Department of Veterans’ Affairs issued Health Card, Veteran Card, a current ADF ID card or other eligible veterans’ identification when boarding.

Veterans using free travel on light rail

Veterans who travel on light rail will need to carry their Veteran Card or Health Card, a current ADF ID card or other eligible veterans’ identification and present it to light rail staff on request.
