Construction of Light Rail Stage 2A is underway with significant works taking place in November and December 2025 to install the tracks and connect the existing light rail network at the intersection at Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street.
More information regarding the construction work can be found on the Built for CBR website. A further closure will be required in January 2026, details of which will be provided closer to the date.
To enable the works, the Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street intersection will be closed on the following dates.
- 8 pm Friday 21 November to 6 am Monday 24 November 2025:
- City bus interchange platforms 1 and 3 will be closed. Please use the following alternative bus stops or platforms:
- For City bus interchange platform 1, please use platform 6 at the City or bus stop 4530 on Marcus Clarke Street before Rimmer Street for routes R2, R3, R4 northbound services.
- No services depart from platform 3. Passengers will now be dropped off at platform 11 during this time.
- Route 53 to National Museum will be departing from City bus interchange platform 12 (instead of platform 8).

- 8 pm Friday 28 November to 6 am Tuesday 2 December 2025 and 8 pm Friday 5 December to 6 am Monday 8 December 2025:
- There will be some bus diversions for buses going in and out of the City bus interchange during these 2 weekends. Minor delays are expected but no stops will be missed.
- Routes affected:
- R2, R3 and R4 northbound services.
- R5, R6, R7 and R10 to City.
- Routes 32, 50, 51 and 53 to the National Museum.
- Route 59, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and R10 southbound services.
- Route 53 to Dickson.
To allow safe access for track installation, there will be no light rail services operating between Alinga Street and Sandford Street with rail replacement buses operating.
