Concessions


Free travel

The following passengers may be eligible for free travel on Transport Canberra services:

  • children aged 5 and under not attending school
  • ACT Seniors aged 70 and over
  • Department of Veterans Affairs TPI or EDA Gold Card holders and their companion
  • passengers with a visual impairment
  • approved Student Transport Program concession holders
  • companions travelling with a Companion Card holder

As part of a off peak trial, the following card holders travel for free on weekdays from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm and after 6:00 pm. They also travel for free all day on weekends and public holidays:

  • Health Care Card or Pension Card issued by the Australian Government
  • ACT Services Access Card
  • DVA Gold Card
  • ACT and Interstate Seniors Card

If you have a concession card you may be eligible for reduced or free fares when travelling on Transport Canberra bus and light rail services. Proof of concession entitlement must be carried at all times. Make sure your MyWay card has a positive balance and remember to tap on and tap off correctly to access concession fares.

How to get a concession MyWay

You will need to present your concession card to a MyWay agent. You will be required to present your card at an agent each time your concession is renewed to maintain your concession fare entitlement.

Failure to reapply your concession upon expiry will result in standard fares being charged for travel.

Refunds will not be provided if you purchase the wrong card type, do not provide proof of concession, or the concession entitlement expires.

Examples of eligible concessions include DVA gold card, companion card, travel passes, health care card, pension card, ACT services access card, seniors card and student ID card.

Types of concessions

ACT Seniors

The ACT Seniors Card is available to people aged 60 and over who are permanent residents, reside in the ACT and not in paid employment for more than 20 hours per week. The ACT Seniors Card can be loaded with travel credit and gives you access to reduced concession fares. Free off peak travel is available on weekends, public holidays and between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm and after 6:00 pm on weekdays. Seniors 70 and over receive free travel at all times. ACT Seniors are also eligible for concession travel on the NSW Opal public transport network. For Gold Opal card application details please visit the Transport NSW Opal website.

Interstate Seniors

Interstate Senior MyWay card holders receive the same concession fare as ACT Seniors and MyWay pension card holders and are able to travel for free during off peak times. Interstate card holders are not eligible for the over 70s free travel. Find out how to get an Interstate Seniors MyWay card.

Concession fares and Concession MyWay cards are available for the following:

  • Health Care Card or Pension Card issued by the Department of Human Services
  • DVA Gold Card issued by the Department of Veterans' Affairs*
  • ACT Services Access Card issued by Companion House

*DVA Gold Cards marked with TPI or EDA are entitled to free travel for the card holder and companion or carer. Present the card on the bus, or apply for a free travel pass by phoning 13 17 10 or emailing TCCS myway@act.gov.au.

Free off peak travel is available as part of a trial for Health Care Card, Pension Card and DVA Gold Card holders.

Your concession MyWay card will give you access to concession fares until the expiry of your proof of concession. If you are issued with a new concession card please take this to a MyWay agent so they can extend the concession status of your MyWay card. After the expiry date, your MyWay card will continue to work but you will be charged regular bus fares.

Primary, secondary and tertiary students are eligible for concession fares and either Student or Tertiary MyWay cards.

Primary, High School and College students

Student MyWay cards are available for primary school students and full time high school and college students. They offer reduced fares which differ on school and non-school days.

To get a Student Myway card you must present a Primary School, High School or College Student Identity Card which is issued by a school within Australian and has the student's name, date of birth, photo and full time status. Primary school children without a student identity card will need to provide a date of birth to the MyWay agent at the time of purchase. The student concession is extended to the end of secondary/college studies based on the date of birth.

Tertiary students

Tertiary MyWay cards are available to full time students attending an Australian university (public or private) or CIT. Fares are the same for all days of the week.

To get a Tertiary MyWay card you must provide a Tertiary Student Identity Card (for public or private university and CIT) which is issued by an Australian higher education institution and has the student's name, photo and full time status.

Tertiary MyWay cards purchased from a MyWay agent will expire at the same time as your Student Identity Card. Tertiary MyWay cards ordered online will expire on 31 March of the following year. Please take your valid Student Identity Card to a MyWay agent so they can extend the expiry date in line with your Student Identity Card.

Vision Impaired Travel Pass

Vision Impaired Travel Pass holders are entitled to free travel on Transport Canberra bus and light rail services. Free travel includes an attendant, if required.

Companion Card

Concession fares apply to holders of a MyWay Concession card. If you also hold a Companion Card, the companion or carer travels for free. Companion Cards are issued by the Community Services Directorate.

Frequently asked questions

To get a concession MyWay card:

  1. Check if you qualify for a concession MyWay card.
  2. Visit a MyWay agent and show them proof of your concession. They will issue you with a concession MyWay card which gives you access to reduced fares until the expiry date on your proof of concession.
  3. Once your concession status expires, your MyWay card will continue to work but you will be charged the regular bus fare. To reapply your concession status, visit a MyWay agent with your new card and they will update the expiry date so you can continue to access reduced fares.
