Types of travel

Consider promoting alternative travel options which make Canberra a more sustainable and liveable city.

Canberra provides an ideal environment to get daily steps in by walking. It features over 3,500 kilometres of footpaths, relatively flat gradients, dry climate and 1,000 kilometres of off-road paths.

Encouraging staff, customers and visitors to incorporate walking into their routine creates a healthier workforce, business and city. Plan a trip using the walking maps and journey planner.

Promote the benefits of walking by downloading the walking factsheet and walk to work flyer (PDF 183.9 KB).

Canberra has the highest level of cycling compared to other cities in Australia. 23% of Canberrans ride a bike during a typical week, much higher than the national average of 18%.

Encourage staff, customers and visitors to work out before their work day by cycling. This creates a healthier workforce, business and city. Plan a trip using the cycling maps and journey planner.

Canberrans are early adopters of emerging transport trends, and the ACT Government supports this by legalising the use of e-scooters and other personal mobility devices on pathways.

Shared e-scooters are available for hire throughout regions of Canberra. Hop on and travel between central Canberra, Belconnen, Gungahlin, Woden, Weston Creek, Molonglo and Tuggeranong. E-scooters are a popular active travel option which help to shift people away from car dependence, better connect them with public transport and introduce them to their local network of shared paths. They are convenient, accessible, environmentally friendly and fun.

Shared e-scooters are a convenient option for short trips on their own or combined with public transport.

Promote the benefits of cycling by downloading the e-scooting factsheet and e-scoot to work flyer (PDF 168.6 KB).

Taking public transport rather than driving can be a healthier, cheaper and relaxing. Public transport commuters average 35 minutes of physical activity per day whereas private vehicle commuters average 10 minutes per day.

Encouraging staff, customers and visitors to catch public transport to your workplace reduces road congestion and improves the liveability of our city. Transport Canberra’s journey planner shows what public transport options are available.

Promote the benefits of using public transport by downloading the public transport factsheet and public transport to work flyer (PDF 179.5 KB).

Carpooling is a practical way to reduce individual transport costs and ease demand on the roads. It also provides people with the opportunity to engage socially outside of the office environment.

Help colleagues in your workplace find each other by using the buddy finder template (PDF 90.7 KB)and promote the benefits of carpooling by downloading the carpooling factsheet and carpool to work flyer (PDF 158.6 KB).
