School programs

Riding, walking, scooting or skating to school is a simple way to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Select your school from the list below to find printable resources to help you with your journey to school.

Ride or Walk to School (Safe cycle)

The Ride or Walk to School program provides ACT primary schools with safe cycling resources. It is aligned to the Australian curriculum and includes teacher training and information for parents. The aim is to increase the number of children walking and riding to and from school.

It’s Your Move Safe Cycle

It’s Your Move Safe Cycle program provides ACT high schools with safe cycling resources. It is aligned to the Australian curriculum. It includes teacher training and information for parents. The aim is to increase the number of students walking and riding to and from school.

School crossing supervisors

School crossing supervisors (lollipop people) assist children to cross the road. They direct traffic with a stop sign and help manage the flow of pedestrians and motorists at the busiest crossings. The program commenced in 2018 at a select number of school crossings. Information about the site selection process is available on the school crossing supervisor program page.

Student Transport Program

The student transport program is for eligible primary, high school and college students. It provides free travel on Transport Canberra services from Monday to Friday during the school term.

Active Streets

Active Streets makes it safer and easier for children to ride or walk to school. The program delivers infrastructure improvements around schools and educational campaigns. It also places stencils on popular paths to promote walking and riding to school.

We work closely with schools, parents and across government to deliver Active Streets. Together we can address specific safety concerns raised by schools.

Bike and Walking Bus

A bike or walking bus is a group of students (including parents and/or volunteers) who ride or walk to school together on a set route, following a set timetable, both to and from school.

Students may join or leave the bike or walking bus at various points along the route. On top of being great fun, there’s heaps of other benefits to joining a bike or walking bus. For children, there’s nothing like riding or walking with friends by their side to get their day off to the best start.

School crossing flags

To help keep children safe around school crossings, Transport Canberra can provide ACT schools with school crossing flags. These flags are provided and funded by the School Safety Program (SPP); however stocks are limited. Schools are responsible for the proper management of their crossing flags.
