Concessions


If you have a concession card you may be eligible for free or discounted fares when travelling on Transport Canberra bus and light rail services. All concession holders must carry their proof of concession while travelling on public transport.

The following passengers may be eligible for free travel on Transport Canberra bus and light rail services:

  • children aged 5 and under not attending school
  • ACT seniors aged 70 and over
  • Department of Veterans Affairs TPI or EDA Gold card holders (including their companion)
  • persons with permanent impairment (including visual impairment)
  • companions travelling with a Companion Card holder.

The following card holders travel for free on weekdays from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and after 6:00 pm (off-peak). Travel is free all day on weekends and public holidays.

  • Health Care Card or Pension Card (issued by the Australia Government)
  • ACT Services Access Card
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card
  • ACT Seniors Card (aged 60-69)
  • interstate seniors card.

Eligible concessions for travel on buses & light rail  DVA gold card: Concession fares apply to the card holder at all times. Cards marked with TPI or EDA are entitled to free travel. Their companion or carer also travels free.  Companion card: Concession fares apply to the card holder at all time. Companion or carer travels free. Passes permanent impairment and TPI travel passes: Free travel entitlement applies to card holder at all times, including free travel for an attendant if required.  Health care card: Concession fares apply to the primary card holder at all times.  Seniors card: Concession fares apply to ACT or interstate seniors card holders at all times. ACT card holders over the age of 70 travel free.  Act services access card: Concession fares apply to the card holder at all times.  Digital concession card: Pension & Health Care Cards displayed on mobile devices provide concession eligibility for the primary card holder listed.  Pension card: Concession fares apply to the primary card holder at all times.  Student ID: CARD All student Identification cards must be for institutions within Australia. Primary & High School students are eligible for concession fares at all times. Tertiary students must show ID with full time status.  Children Aged 5 & under who are not attending school travel free.

Register your concession in your MyWay+ account

Register your concession in your MyWay+ account to receive the correct fare, including discounted or free travel. Check your concession eligibility above.

You can select your concession type when setting up your MyWay+ account. If you already have a MyWay+ account, you can update your concession status. To do this, select ‘Register concession’ on the menu. Select ‘Concession’ under Fare Type, and then ‘select your concession type’ from the list. Press the ‘Submit’ button.

In your MyWay+ account you can link various methods to tap on and off. Link a contactless payment method (Mastercard or Visa) or a MyWay+ travel card so you receive the correct fare discounts (or free travel) no matter what method you tap on and off with.

You can also order a MyWay+ travel card through your MyWay+ account. Once you set up your account, you can set your concession and order a travel card which will have your concession applied.

You will receive an email reminder to update and revalidate your concession 15 days before your concession expires. Accounts where concessions are not revalidated will revert to a standard adult account.

Apply your concession to your MyWay+ travel card

You can order a MyWay+ travel card through your MyWay+ account. Once you set up your account, you can set your concession and order a travel card which will have your concession applied.

Alternatively, you have the option of getting a new MyWay+ travel card and travelling anonymously without a MyWay+ account. You will need to add travel credit to the card for when you travel.

MyWay+ travel cards are available from MyWay+ retail outlets. Proof of concession will need to be presented at time of purchase.

Concession expiry

Important: Concessions are set to expire based on predefined time periods. If you have a MyWay+ account you will receive an email 15 days before your concession is set to expire, reminding you to update or revalidate your concession. Your account will revert to a standard adult account if the concession is not revalidated.

Concession expiry periods:

  • Student (primary and secondary): 31 December of the year of purchase*.
  • Tertiary: 31 March of the year following purchase.
  • Senior: 3 years from the date of validation, including seniors over 70.
  • Pension concession: 1 year from the date of purchase.

*Will be extended to 31 December 2025 initially to help with the transition.
