Rail Safety Week 2026 - Helping keep Canberra's light rail network safe

Rail Safety Week returns from Monday 10 August to Sunday 16 August 2026.

Transport Canberra is proud to support this annual campaign, which encourages everyone to stay safe and act responsibly on and around rail networks.

Working alongside Canberra Metro Operations (CMET), emergency services, schools and community partners, we're putting a spotlight on rail safety and the important role everyone plays in preventing incidents.

Rail safety is everyone's responsibility.

Whether you're walking, cycling, driving or travelling on public transport, simple actions can help keep you and others safe around our light rail network.

Remember to:

Rail environments present unique safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and public transport users.

As Canberra's light rail network continues to grow and connect more people across our city, we all play a role in learning about and practising safe behaviours to reduce the likelihood of incidents.

Rail incidents can have lasting impacts on individuals, families, rail workers, first responders and the broader community. During Rail Safety Week, we reflect on how our actions can help create a safer transport network for everyone.

As part of Rail Safety Week 2026, Canberra Metro Operations (CMET) is hosting the annual Rail Safety School Poster Competition.

Graphic design students have been invited to create artwork that promotes rail safety messages for the Canberra community. These students come from the following schools:

  • Burgmann Anglican School
  • Daramalan College
  • Dickson College
  • Gungahlin College.

Four winning designs will feature on specially wrapped light rail vehicles, helping share important rail safety messages across the network year-round.

The competition encourages young people to champion rail safety by using creativity and design to educate the wider community.

The Canberra community will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite poster design from 32 shortlisted entries during a three-week public voting period, which will run until Monday 31 August 2026.

The artist whose design receives the most votes will be awarded the People’s Choice Award, with the winning artwork to be announced on social media.

Rail Safety Week is an opportunity to learn more about rail safety, start conversations with family and friends and help create a safer environment around Canberra's light rail network.

Together, we can keep Canberra moving safely.
