Transport Canberra is not just about getting people from A to B, it's about the people who make those journeys memorable and enjoyable. Stu is one of our many drivers who finds joy behind the wheel, spreads positivity and makes meaningful connections with his customers.
Stu completed his bus driver training courses in December last year. Prior to that, he spent 2 years planting trees in our parks and public places. Seeking to expand his skillset and find something new, Stu applied to be a casual bus driver with Transport Canberra.
Despite initially treating it as an opportunity for skill development, Stu quickly found himself enjoying the role. “I love driving and I love talking to my passengers. Every time a customer gets on board and smiles or they're thankful, that's what makes it all worth it. Knowing they had a good trip is all I could wish for," said Stu. Becoming a bus driver is what Stu planned, but it's a job he never anticipated liking as much as he does now.
Beyond his role as a bus driver, Stu shines with his sketches of buses, which he started drawing during his training period.
"It chills me out and is my happy place, even though I’ve never drawn vehicles or buses before. It’s nothing professional but drawing the buses or even sketching something like a steering wheel and some of the buttons on the buses is very fun," Stu shared.
Drawing is a source of relaxation for Stu within the hustle and bustle of everyday work and life.
Last week, Stu successfully transferred to a permanent part-time bus driver position after being casual for around 2 months. It’s a testament to his dedication.
“It feels great,” Stu said with a big smile. “Everyone here is super friendly and being part of this team is amazing."
Transitioning from a casual role to a permanent role has its challenges, but Stu found unconditional support from the recruitment team, who guided him through the process smoothly.
Stu maintains his enthusiasm by embracing each journey as a fresh new start. He approaches each run with a positive mindset, knowing the next passenger brings new stories.
Stu's infectious positivity doesn’t end here. As he continues his journey, he is committed in providing a safe and enjoyable journey for everyone onboard his buses.
