Accessible Travel

Transport Canberra is committed to providing an accessible bus service. This is provided through easy access buses and services for hearing, vision and mobility impaired users. The ACT Regional Community Bus Services also operate mini buses for people who are socially isolated because a lack of transport options. View the Accessible Travel page.

The Community Transport Coordination Centre

The Community Transport Coordination Centre is a central point where residents can access alternative public transport options, including the newly developed Flexible Bus Service. If you require assistance with community public transport, please call the Coordination Centre on (02) 6205 3555. The Centre is open Monday - Friday, 9.00am - 4.00pm and closed public holidays.

Special Needs Transport Program

The Special Needs Transport (SNT) Program provides transport assistance for eligible ACT public school students with a disability. See School Services for further information, including eligibility criteria.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Bus

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander transport program provides opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to connect with their communities and culture in the ACT and surrounding regions. This service is available to those who do no have access to an ACTION bus. The Community Bus operates Monday to Friday during business hours. If you need transport in and around Canberra, you can make a booking for the bus to pick you up and drop you off. Flexible Bus Service

The Flexible Bus Service is available to Canberra residents who have limited access to public transport options. It is a basic bus service which is localised to particular zones.

Designed specifically for residents such as the aged or people with a mobility difficulty, the Flexible Bus Service is a free service which operates off a basic timetable, picking up residents from their home and taking them to local community service providers such as local shopping centres and hospitals. The fleet of minibuses are all wheelchair accessible.

The service is assessed on a case by case basis. To qualify, you may be asked if you comply with the following criteria:

  • seniors card holders with mobility issues
  • seniors card holders aged 70 or over
  • living in a nursing home and/or retirement village
  • impacted by a permanent or temporary disability that prevents you from accessing regular route services
  • holders of a Vision Impaired (VIP), or Total and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) travel pass.

Carers with a valid carers card are welcome to travel. If you are a carer or need your carer to accompany you on the bus please let the operator know at the time of booking.

Bookings must be madetwo days prior to travel. Pick up of passengers from suburbs around particular zones commence at 9.30am and return trips start promptly at 1.30pm.

The Flexible Bus office hours are 9am - 4pm Monday to Friday. An answering machine is available for after hours. Please leave a detailed message and an operator will call you back.

The Flexible Bus Service does not operate on weekends, public holidays or public service shutdown periods.

Zone 1 - Belconnen

Florey, Higgins, Latham, Scullin, Page, Hawker, Weetangera, Cook, Macquarie, Aranda, Bruce Giralang, Evatt, Melba, McKellar, Kaleen, Lawson, Bruce, Spence and Belconnen.

Pick up from home and then to Westfield Belconnen/ Jamison Centre/ Kippax Fair via Calvary Hospital on request.
Return Journey: Pick up Calvary Hospital to Belconnen Bus Station (Platform 1) to Jamison Centre (Taxi rank)/ Kippax Fair then home drop off.

Zone 2 - Inner South

Deakin, Hughes, O'Malley, Phillip, Garran, Curtin, Red Hill, Narrabundah, Kingston, Griffith, Forrest and Yarralumla, Duffy, Holder, Rivett, Chapman, Stirling, Weston, Waramanga, Fisher, Lyons, Curtin, Pearce, Chifley, Torrens and Phillip.

Pick up from home and then to Westfield Woden/ Cooleman Court/ Southlands via Canberra Hospital on request.
Return Journey: Pick up Canberra Hospital/Woden Bus Station(Platform 1)/ Cooleman Court (Brierly St)/ Southlands then home drop off.

Zone 3 - Tuggeranong

Kambah, Wanniassa, Oxley, Fadden, Macarthur, Monash, Chisholm, Richardson, Isabella Plains, Bonython, Gordon, Calwell, Theodore, Conder and Banks.

Pick up from home and then to Hyperdome/ Erindale Centre/ Lanyon Marketplace via Canberra Hospital on request.
Return Journey: Pick up Canberra Hospital/ Erindale Centre/ Hyperdome (Platform 1)/ Lanyon Marketplace then home drop off.

Zone 4 - Gungahlin

Amaroo, Bonner, Casey, Crace, Franklin, Forde, Harrison, Jacka, Kenny, Kinlyside, Moncreiff, Ngunnawal, Nicholls, Palmerston, Taylor, Throsby and Hall.

Pick up from home and then to Gungahlin Marketplace/ Gold Creek Village via Calvary Hospital on request.
Return Journey: Pick up from Calvary Hospital/ Gungahlin Marketplace/Gold Creek Village then home drop off.

Zone 5 – Inner North

Watson, Downer, Hackett, Dickson, Lyneham, Turner, O’Connor, Ainslie, Braddon, Acton, Reid, Campbell and Russell.

Pick up from home and then to Dickson Shops/ Ainslie Shops/ The Canberra Centre (Platform 1 City Bus Station) and Calvary Hospital on request.
Return Journey: Pick up Calvary Hospital/ Ainslie Shops/ Canberra Centre (Platform 1 City Bus Station)/ Dickson shops then home drop off.

Group charter service

The Flexible Bus Service also provides a charter service for large groups wishing to travel outside of serviced zones for a fee. Please phone 6205 3555 for more information about group charters.
