Getting to school

Active travel

Walking, riding or using public transport is the preferred mode of transport to travel to and from schools in Canberra. Active travel for schools has information about the initiatives being delivered to support walking and riding to school. Information about public transport for schools is available below.

Public transport

The ACT Government is introducing a new integrated public transport network for Canberra from Monday 29 April 2019. This network will include bus and light rail services operating together to give Canberrans more options to use public transport, every day of the week.

As part of this change, the way students will get to school by public transport will change from Term 2, 2019. Some students will use different routes, make connections between services or use light rail for the first time, and every student who will use public transport to get to and from school needs to be aware of the changes.

Rural services to ACT schools

Find a rural service for Queanbeyan, Hall, Tidbinbilla, Uriarra, Tharwa, and Majura Road.

If Transport Canberra services are unavailable in your rural area, you may be eligible for a conveyance allowance to reimburse the costs of transporting your child to school or the nearest bus stop.

Free student transport

Some full-time students are eligible for free travel Monday to Friday during the school term under the school transport program.

Parents travelling on school services

School bus services are available for school students only. Under special circumstances, parents may temporarily travel on a school service with their school child to help them adjust to travelling on a bus. Complete the Short-Term Parent School Bus Travel Application Form (Word 2MB) Short-Term Parent School Bus Travel Application form (PDF) and allow at least 10 working days for a response. Normal fares apply if the application is approved.
