Rail Safety Week is an annual initiative held in Australia and New Zealand aimed at raising awareness about safe behaviour around trains and trams.
Running from Monday 11 to Sunday 17 August 2025, this year, Rail Safety Week marks the 20th anniversary of the campaign. Transport Canberra is proud to be supporting the TrackSAFE initiative for a seventh consecutive year, to promote a heightened awareness of the importance of rail safety.
Light rail is now a regular part of life in Canberra – whether you are a passenger, pedestrian, cyclist, e-scooter rider or motorist, we all have a role to play in staying rail safe.
A single moment of distraction can change everything. But if we all follow the rules and stay alert, we can all stay safe.
This Rail Safety Week, we ask you to:
Pause your tunes. Look and listen for light rail.
- Be aware of your surroundings when walking around or across the light rail tracks.
- Please pay attention around the tracks and stops.
- Limit distractions such as mobile phones and headphones.
Phone down. Look up. Let’s stay rail safe.
- Light rail is part of Canberra’s landscape. It’s vital that we take important steps to be safe. We all need to be vigilant when near light rail tracks whether we’re passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter riders or motorists.
- A moment of distraction can change your life forever. If everyone follows the rules, we all stay rail safe!
- If you are concerned about your safety or the safety of others, please use the Emergency Help Points on platforms and on-board light rail vehicles to contact staff.
Stay safe. Stand behind the line.
- Always stand behind the yellow line at the light rail platforms.
- Only cross the tracks at the designated walkways.
- Be aware of your surroundings when walking around or across the light rail tracks.
- Only cross on a green pedestrian signal, as a light rail vehicle may be hidden or approaching from the opposite direction.

Rail safety poster competition
This year, graphic design students from Gungahlin, Dickson and Daramalan Colleges brought their creativity to the track and created a range of unique safety posters as part of a rail safety poster competition.
The four winning designs, displayed below, have been created by Amelia Bobbin and Paddy Collins from Dickson College, Lailani Arizapa and Liam Osborn from Daramalan College. Their eye-catching safety posters will be featured on the sides of two light rail vehicle and across our social channels throughout the week to help spread the message of safe behaviour around light rail.
But the track doesn’t stop there! You can also vote for your favourite safety poster in the People’s Choice award. The winner will be announced on social media. Voting closes at midnight on Sunday 31 August 2025.
Stay rail safe and get voting!
