MyWay

Studying can be stressful so take a load off your mind and travel the smart way with MyWay – the most cost-effective option to travel around Canberra on public transport. Simply tap on and off to get the cheapest fare!

Make sure you have a MyWay card that it is registered, topped up with sufficient funds and has a tertiary concession applied.

Tertiary MyWay cards and concession bus fares are available for full time students attending university and CIT. You can get a card from a MyWay agent or use the online application form. You must provide your student identity card issued by an Australian Tertiary Institution with your name, photo and full time status. This student identity card must also be carried with you when you use public transport.

Ticket vending machines can be used to top up your MyWay card instantly, check your balance or purchase a single or daily ticket. Ticket vending machines are available at Gungahlin, Woden, City and Tuggeranong major bus stations, all light rail stops and the Canberra Airport.

For more information see the Student MyWay guide.

Buses

Whether you are new to catching buses or you are a regular user, don’t forget that safety is important! Make sure you are familiar with these rules for inside and outside the bus:

  • you must signal the driver as the bus will not automatically service each stop it travels past
  • when waiting for a bus to arrive make sure you stand back from the kerb
  • enter the bus in a single file
  • if a seat is free, please sit down and stow your bag underneath the seat, clear of the aisle
  • if there are no seats available, move to the back of the bus to leave room for others
  • hold on to the closest rail or strap while standing
  • exit in a single file and once off the bus, do not cross the road until it has gone.

Light rail

Stay safe near the light rail corridor by following these rules:

  • stay behind the yellow line at the light rail stop
  • avoid distractions such as phones and headphones when around the light rail
  • cross at designated crossings and wait for the green signal
  • stay clear of the doors so passengers can exit the light rail vehicle before you board
  • hold on when onboard
  • encourage others to be safe.

Walking, cycling and more

Walking and riding are great ways get some exercise into your day and help the environment by driving less. You also do not have to pay for parking. To plan your route check out the cycling and walking maps.

Riding a bike is a great way to connect with the Transport Canberra network using Bike & Ride. You can ride your bike and secure it to a bike rail or at one of our 6 secure cages. You can utilise the bike racks on our bus services and take your bike on board on the light rail, as you continue your journey.

Shared e-scooters are a convenient option for short trips on their own or combined with public transport. For more information see the shared e-scooters map. While you are embracing e-scooters as a fun and convenient way to get around town, please familiarise yourself with the e-scooter safety tips.
