Primary school students across Canberra are encouraged to lace up their shoes and walk to school with friends and family on Friday 16 May 2025 as part of National Walk Safely to School Day.
National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event that encourages parents, carers and teachers to promote safe pedestrian behaviours – from learning how to cross the roads safely to reminding children up to 10 years old to always hold an adult’s hand when crossing.
Walking to and from school helps build healthy habits early. It supports children’s physical, mental and social wellbeing. Children who walk (or ride) to school are more likely to arrive alert and ready to learn. Walking or riding is not only a great way for kids to include physical activity into their day, but it also helps teach independence – all while reducing the environmental impacts caused by car travel.
For more information on how to get involved, visit Walk Safely to School Day.
National Walk Safely to School Day takes place during National Road Safety Week 2025, which runs from Sunday 11 to Sunday 18 May.
This is a reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility as we work toward Vision Zero – no deaths or serious injuries on our roads.
As part of the week, all Canberrans and people all over Australia are being urged to recommit to safe driving and take the pledge to drive so others survive.
